Dirk Hovy is the scientific director of DMI and a Full Professor in the Computing Science Department. His research focuses on natural language processing and computational social science, or what language can tell us about society, and what computers can tell us about language. Specifically, he researches the interaction of demographic factors and their consequences for performance, fairness, and personalization of language technology. He received an ERC 2020 Starting Grant to research this topic. He is also interested in deep learning, graphical models, and ethical questions of bias and algorithmic fairness in machine learning.
